On Saturday, August 23rd, 2025, we stood at the edge of a pasture and watched as our first herd of Randall Cattle stepped onto the land. It was a quiet, meaningful moment. One of those moments that makes you feel like you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
These animals are more than just cattle to us. They represent history, stewardship, and the kind of farming we believe in.
A Vermont Legacy Worth Saving
Randall Cattle are native to Vermont. They were developed over generations on a family farm in Sunderland and were once common on small farms across New England. Known for their calm temperament and versatility, they provided milk, meat, and even worked the fields.
Over time, they nearly disappeared. Today, the breed is critically endangered, with fewer than 500 animals worldwide at the time we published this article. When we learned that, it became clear to us that helping preserve this breed aligned perfectly with our vision for the farm.
This land has history, and the Randalls belong to that story. Bringing them here felt like a homecoming.
A Natural Fit for Our Pastures
Each Randall is unique. They are white with black or blue-gray markings, strong yet gentle, and incredibly well suited to Vermont’s terrain and seasons. Watching them take their first steps across the pasture, grazing and exploring, it was easy to picture them here a hundred years ago.
We spent our first year restoring the barns, clearing space, and preparing the land with care. Every decision was made slowly and intentionally, guided by the idea that we weren’t just fixing up an old farm. We were bringing something meaningful back to life.
As we move forward, our focus will stay on thoughtful growth and conservation. The Randall herd is now an essential part of that vision.

Looking Ahead
This is just the beginning. We plan to grow the herd in time and participate in conservation breeding efforts. We’re committed to giving these animals the space, care, and respect they deserve.
We also hope to share their story with others. Whether it’s through farm visits, future workshops, or just photos and updates, we want people to understand what makes the Randall breed so special and why its preservation matters.
Why This Matters
For us, Sterling Hollow Farm is about more than working the land. It’s about restoring it. It’s about choosing a path that values biodiversity, patience, and a deeper connection to place.
Welcoming these cattle felt like a step toward that vision. A small step, but one that carries a lot of meaning.
We’re proud to be part of this breed’s future and grateful to have you following along with ours.
